Employee diversity

Under a single roof there can be employees with various differences in terms of culture, gender, age, experience, ethnicity, education etc. Workforce diversity lead to share better experience with staff in organization and promote to build up a strong and more successful team.

“Diversity requires a type of organizational culture in which each employee can pursue his or her career aspirations without being inhibited by gender, race, nationality, religion, or other factors that are irrelevant to performance”. (Bryan, 1999) 

“Subsumed all these points under the definition of diversity as “any significant difference that distinguishes one individual from another”, covering a wide variety of factors that might be obvious to other individuals or hidden under the surface”. (s. Kreitz 2008, p. 102)


Opportunities with Workforce diversity

Employee diversity promote more advantages for the organization. This will affect to wellbeing of the organization and also career growth of employees.

  1. Increase creativity and innovations

  • When people come from different environments, cultures and experiences, it is leading to share fresh ideas, modern methods. This will increase efficiency of operation in the organization.

     2. Comfort for decision making 

  • People from different background can be consisted with various information and can have faced for different business challenges. It may facilitate for getting proper decisions.
     3. Create more talent pool

  • Through a more diversity, organization ability to catch human resources with different talents.
     4. Increase productivity

  • People with difference experiences and knowledge may lead to practice various technologies and methods for performing tasks. Hence Organization able to get in more quality output.
     5. Buildup a strong customer base

  • With workforce diversity, organization relationship, social network become border and also increase the customer's attraction.







Challenges with workforce diversity

With the diversity among workforce, there may have a critical side to the organization. The organization that is able to manage challenges with workforce diversity will attract more benefits to achieve their goals.

Challenges with workforce diversity,

  1. Lack of communication

  • Due to differences in language and communication patterns lead to make misunderstand among employees and conflict within the organization.

     2. Discrimination within employees

  • With the diversity of age, culture, language and other personal characteristics, there can be a gap between thinking patterns, ideas. Hence this will lead to create discrimination within employees.
    3. Lack of trust

  • This can be happened with differences in values, beliefs and attitudes.
    4. Recruitments and retentions

  • Some organizations are facing this problem with their industry, due to demographical barriers and cultural barriers avoid people from entering some industries.
   5. Cultural difference

  • This can be affected to employees directly and it will be a reason for isolating some employees, Hence it will lead to decrease employee’s commitments and job satisfaction.

Managing challenges with workforce diversity 

Workforce diversity consist with more advantages and challenges. The organization needs to filter those advantages and challenges carefully. When managing diversity in workforce, the organization always keep in sensitive with employees and behaviors of them. Organizations should practice to manage this subject in strategical manner. As per Dass and Parker, 1999, “There is no single best way to manage workforce diversity. In most cases, the approach used by a firm depends on the amount of pressure for diversity, the type of diversity in question, and managerial attitudes”. Difference Strategies can be implemented for controlling challenges related to diversity successfully. Some of them are encouraging for open communication, celebrating diversity, language buildup programs and so on. Through these strategies, can be made a strength workforce. Hence workforce diversity is a better experience and factor for achievements of organizations.

Conclusion

Overall, a diverse workforce can bring many benefits to organizations, including increased innovation, better decision-making, and improved financial performance. Employers who embrace diversity and inclusivity can build a more successful and sustainable organization, while also contributing to a more just and equitable society.
